Progress in Evidence-Based TMD Treatments<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Efficient early intervention helps deter TMD\u2019s development; and today, new studies support a\u00a0comprehensive TMD pain management<\/a><\/em>\u00a0approach involving evidence-based treatment.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Experienced, certified Orofacial Pain Experts treating Temporomandibular disorders (TMD<\/span>) have long relied on their proven\u00a0TMD<\/span>\u00a0treatment capabilities. Thankfully, many individuals\u00a0suffering from painful TMD<\/a>\u00a0have gained significant pain relief.<\/p>\n

At the same time, it is universally acknowledged that improving the\u00a0evidence base for\u00a0TMD<\/span>\u00a0treatments and patient care<\/em>\u00a0is needed.<\/p>\n

Caring for Individuals with a TMD<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Communicating complex medical knowledge, research findings, and practice discoveries to practitioners and patients in a clear, accessible, and meaningful way is challenging for many\u00a0pain clinics<\/a>. However, it\u2019s an important part of translating evidence to improve access to a guideline and TMD health outcomes.<\/p>\n

Historically, treating individuals with temporomandibular disorders, especially chronic and painful TMD cases, has been challenging if seeking scientific evidence. Consider the complexity if a patient has both\u00a0fibromyalgia and TMD complications<\/a>. Future effective care for individuals with TMDs will improve with national alignment on high-quality evidence about which treatments are appropriate and for which patients.\u00a0[1]<\/sup><\/p>\n

The National Institute of Health (NIH) recognizes the benefits of an established, evidence-based TMD treatment guideline and is funding a new collaborative effort.\u00a0[2]<\/sup>\u00a0Together, participants will conduct new clinical trials, build a\u00a0TMD<\/span>\u00a0patient registry, and develop US clinical practice guidelines. This will include additional provider education, narrowing the medical\u2013dental, and increasing access to specialty care.<\/p>\n

NIH and The Minnesota TMD IMPACT Collaborative<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The Minnesota Collaborative participates in an NIH initiative, called the\u00a0TMD Collaborative for Improving Patient-Centered Translational Research<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(TMD<\/span>\u00a0IMPACT). A key goal is to improve the diagnosis and treatment of\u00a0TMD<\/span>\u00a0pain patients through a patient registry that collects data for clinical, translational, analysis, and basic research.<\/p>\n

The principal investigator is Julie K. Olson at the University of Minnesota (U of M), who works with many\u00a0TMD<\/span>\u00a0pain specialists. The Minnesota Head &\u00a0Neck Pain<\/span>\u00a0Clinic has many participating U of M experts, chiefly Dr. Herman and Dr. Fricton<\/p>\n

Cory Herman, DDS, MS, is an\u00a0Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry TMD<\/a>, Orofacial Pain and Dental Sleep Medicine clinic. Regarded as a lead speaker and trainer, he has also developed a\u00a0TMD<\/span>\u00a0Education Course.<\/p>\n

James R. Fricton<\/a>, UMN Department of Diagnostic and Biological Sciences, has over 79 research works with 3301 citations and 16082 reads. When an\u00a0orofacial pain<\/span>\u00a0specialist is\u00a0diagnosing a pain disorder<\/a><\/strong><\/em>, your pain history is key in order to identify a specific type of\u00a0TMD<\/span>.<\/p>\n

The Two Types of TMDs:<\/strong><\/p>\n

  1. Muscular<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 caused by tension or spasms in the muscles used to move a person\u2019s jaw.<\/li>\n
  2. Articular<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 caused by a person\u2019s actual jawbone joint failing to function normally.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Let\u2019s look more closely at the\u00a0facial areas related to\u00a0TMD<\/span>\u00a0versus the muscles involved.\u00a0TMD<\/span>\u00a0involves jaw muscles, temporomandibular joints (bone), and the nerves associated with chronic facial pain.<\/p>\n

    Bone:<\/strong>\u00a0Your\u00a0temporomandibular joint (TMJ)<\/a><\/strong><\/em>\u00a0is a hinge that connects your jaw to your skull\u2019s temporal bones. They are located in front of each ear.<\/p>\n

    Muscles:<\/strong>\u00a0Your muscles that function to close your jaw are masseter, temporal, lateral, or external pterygoid. The muscles that open your jaw are medial or internal pterygoid, geniohyoideus, mylohyoideus; digastric.<\/p>\n
