id=\"the-importance-of-promoting-and-supporting-mental-health-and-wellbeing\">The importance of promoting and supporting mental health and wellbeing<\/h2>\n<p>The government\u2019s\u00a0<a class=\"govuk-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/plan-for-change\">Plan for Change<\/a>\u00a0aims to break down barriers to opportunity. A key element of this plan is to improve support for children and young people\u2019s mental health and wellbeing in schools.<\/p>\n<p>Good mental health and wellbeing improves standards in schools and helps pupils achieve and thrive in education, setting them up well for life and work.<\/p>\n<p>Good mental health and wellbeing helps pupils:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>attend school<\/li>\n<li>develop key life skills, particularly social and emotional skills<\/li>\n<li>engage in learning<\/li>\n<li>achieve academically<\/li>\n<li>have better longer term outcomes, such as future employment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Embedding an evidence-based, holistic, whole school or college approach to mental health and wellbeing helps to achieve this.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"principles-of-a-whole-school-or-college-approach\">Principles of a whole school or college approach<\/h2>\n<p>The Department for Education (<abbr title=\"Department for Education\">DfE<\/abbr>) and the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities published guidance on the\u00a0<a class=\"govuk-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/promoting-children-and-young-peoples-emotional-health-and-wellbeing\">8 principles of a whole school or college approach to mental health and wellbeing<\/a>. These are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>an ethos and environment that promotes respect, and values diversity<\/li>\n<li>leadership and management that supports and champions efforts to promote emotional health and wellbeing<\/li>\n<li>staff development to support their own wellbeing and that of pupils and learners<\/li>\n<li>curriculum teaching and learning to promote resilience and support social and emotional learning<\/li>\n<li>enabling student voice to influence decisions<\/li>\n<li>identifying the need for and monitoring the impact of interventions<\/li>\n<li>targeted support and appropriate referral<\/li>\n<li>working with parents and carers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Schools and colleges can appoint\u00a0a mental health lead to develop and oversee their setting\u2019s whole school or college approach.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"identifying-your-senior-mental-health-lead\">Identifying your senior mental health lead<\/h2>\n<p>Schools and colleges decide who is best placed to take on the role of senior mental health lead. Every setting\u2019s circumstances are different.<\/p>\n<p>Your lead could be a:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>headteacher<\/li>\n<li>deputy headteacher<\/li>\n<li>member of the senior leadership team (SLT)<\/li>\n<li>member of staff who can develop and oversee your setting\u2019s whole school or college approach to mental health and wellbeing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If your senior lead is not a member of your\u00a0SLT, consider whether they have the authority, capacity and support to influence and lead strategic change.<\/p>\n<p>If you are already working with an\u00a0<a class=\"govuk-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/mental-health\/cyp\/trailblazers\/#_Mental_Health_Support\" rel=\"external\"><abbr title=\"Mental Health Support Team\">MHST<\/abbr><\/a>, your nominated senior lead can also be:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>your\u00a0<abbr title=\"Mental Health Support Team\">MHST<\/abbr>\u00a0coordinator<\/li>\n<li>responsible for liaising with the team<\/li>\n<li>a different member of staff<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A list of\u00a0<span class=\"gem-c-attachment-link\">\u00a0<a class=\"govuk-link\" href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/media\/686be47710d550c668de3bf7\/Senior_mental_health_lead_training_courses_March_2025_Updated_23.06.2025.pdf\">senior mental health lead training courses\u00a0<\/a>(<span class=\"gem-c-attachment-link__attribute\"><abbr class=\"gem-c-attachment-link__abbr\" title=\"Portable Document Format\">PDF<\/abbr><\/span>,\u00a0<span class=\"gem-c-attachment-link__attribute\">246 KB<\/span>,\u00a0<span class=\"gem-c-attachment-link__attribute\">21 pages<\/span>)<\/span>\u00a0is available. As of February 2025, we do not quality assure courses and cannot guarantee their availability.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"gem-c-attachment-link\"><a class=\"govuk-link\" href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/media\/6875024371b773f60c9c1f62\/Learning_outcomes_for_senior_metal_health_leads_in_schools_and_colleges.pdf\">Senior mental health lead learning outcomes<\/a>\u00a0(<span class=\"gem-c-attachment-link__attribute\"><abbr class=\"gem-c-attachment-link__abbr\" title=\"Portable Document Format\">PDF<\/abbr><\/span>,\u00a0<span class=\"gem-c-attachment-link__attribute\">173 KB<\/span>,\u00a0<span class=\"gem-c-attachment-link__attribute\">9 pages<\/span>)<\/span>\u00a0outlines the knowledge and skills that a mental health lead might develop, enabling them to embed an effective whole school or college approach to\u00a0<a class=\"govuk-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/promoting-children-and-young-peoples-emotional-health-and-wellbeing\">promoting children and young people\u2019s mental health and wellbeing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Senior mental health leads may benefit from joining a peer support network, which can provide resources, and share knowledge and good practice.\u00a0<span class=\"gem-c-attachment-link\"><a class=\"govuk-link\" href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/media\/6874fd7092691289bdb7d396\/Peer_support_networks_for_school_and_college_mental_health_leads.pdf\">Peer support networks for school and college mental health leads<\/a>\u00a0(<span class=\"gem-c-attachment-link__attribute\"><abbr class=\"gem-c-attachment-link__abbr\" title=\"Portable Document Format\">PDF<\/abbr><\/span>,\u00a0<span class=\"gem-c-attachment-link__attribute\">187 KB<\/span>,\u00a0<span class=\"gem-c-attachment-link__attribute\">3 pages<\/span>)<\/span>\u00a0has further information and a list of nationally available networks.<\/p>\n<p>Senior mental health leads might wish to access training to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>develop or refresh their knowledge and skills in specific priority areas<\/li>\n<li>get more advanced training<\/li>\n<li>get a relevant qualification<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"resources-for-developing-a-whole-school-or-college-approach\">Resources for developing a whole school or college approach<\/h2>\n<p>The\u00a0<a class=\"govuk-link\" href=\"https:\/\/mentallyhealthyschools.org.uk\/whole-school-or-college-resources\/\" rel=\"external\">mental health lead resource hub<\/a>\u00a0was developed by\u00a0<abbr title=\"Department for Education\">DfE<\/abbr>\u00a0in partnership with education representatives and mental health experts to help mental health leads in their role. It includes evidence-based\u00a0practical resources and tools for schools and colleges.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a class=\"govuk-link\" href=\"https:\/\/mentallyhealthyschools.org.uk\/whole-school-or-college-resources\/targeted-support-toolkit\/\" rel=\"external\">targeted support toolkit<\/a>\u00a0helps schools and colleges review, refresh and develop targeted support for learners with mental health or social and emotional wellbeing needs.<\/p>\n<p>Resources are available for staff, parents and carers to\u00a0<a class=\"govuk-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mentallyhealthyschools.org.uk\/attendance-and-mental-wellbeing-school-college\/\" rel=\"external\">support attendance and mental wellbeing in schools and colleges<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"govuk-link\" href=\"https:\/\/teaching.blog.gov.uk\/?s=mental+health\" rel=\"external\">Teaching blog<\/a>\u00a0includes posts from teachers which can be filtered to find information about student and staff mental health.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"govuk-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.futurelearn.com\/courses\/psychological-first-aid-for-children-and-young-people\" rel=\"external\">Psychological first aid training<\/a>\u00a0supports children and young people\u2019s mental health during emergencies and crisis situations.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mental-health-support-teams-\">Mental health support teams<\/h2>\n<p>Mental health support teams (<abbr title=\"Mental Health Support Teams\">MHSTs<\/abbr>) provide additional capacity to promote and support mental health and wellbeing in primary, secondary and further education settings.<\/p>\n<p><abbr title=\"Mental Health Support Teams\">MHSTs<\/abbr>\u00a0have 3 core functions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>provide early, evidence-based interventions for common mental health issues<\/li>\n<li>support mental health leads to develop and embed a whole school or college approach<\/li>\n<li>give timely advice to staff, and liaise with external specialist services, to help children and young people get the right support and stay in education<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><abbr title=\"Department for Education\">DfE<\/abbr>,\u00a0<abbr title=\"Department of Health and Social Care\">DHSC<\/abbr>\u00a0and the\u00a0<abbr title=\"National Health Service\">NHS<\/abbr>\u00a0are working together to roll out\u00a0<abbr title=\"Mental Health Support Teams\">MHSTs<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<p><abbr title=\"Mental Health Support Teams\">MHSTs<\/abbr>\u00a0include a new workforce of\u00a0<a class=\"govuk-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.healthcareers.nhs.uk\/explore-roles\/psychological-therapies\/roles-psychological-therapies\/education-mental-health-practitioner\" rel=\"external\">education mental health practitioners<\/a>\u00a0who\u00a0work alongside senior clinicians and other professionals. They integrate with the existing mental health and wellbeing support in and around schools and colleges provided by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>counsellors<\/li>\n<li>educational psychologists<\/li>\n<li>school nurses<\/li>\n<li>school and college pastoral care teams<\/li>\n<li>educational welfare officers<\/li>\n<li>the voluntary and community sector<\/li>\n<li>local authorities<\/li>\n<li><abbr title=\"National Health Service\">NHS<\/abbr>\u00a0<a class=\"govuk-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/mental-health\/children-and-young-adults\/mental-health-support\/mental-health-services\/\" rel=\"external\">children and young people\u2019s mental health services<\/a><\/li>\n<li>the voluntary sector<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a class=\"govuk-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/mental-health\/cyp\/trailblazers\/\" rel=\"external\"><abbr title=\"National Health Service\">NHS<\/abbr><\/a>\u00a0has more information.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mental-health-and-wellbeing-resources-for-pupils-parents-and-teachers\">Mental health and wellbeing resources for pupils, parents and teachers<\/h2>\n<h3 id=\"staff-wellbeing-and-development\">Staff wellbeing and development<\/h3>\n<p>School and college teachers and leaders can access support for their own wellbeing and to address challenges around workload.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a class=\"govuk-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/education-staff-wellbeing-charter\">education staff wellbeing charter<\/a>\u00a0is a declaration of support for, and a set of commitments to, the wellbeing and mental health of everyone working in education. It directs education staff to mental health and wellbeing resources.<\/p>\n<p>Guidance developed with school leaders to\u00a0<a class=\"govuk-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/improve-workload-and-wellbeing-for-school-staff\">improve workload and wellbeing for school staff<\/a>\u00a0is available. It has free resources including a workload reduction toolkit and resources to help track and evaluate the impact of workload reduction measures.<\/p>\n<p><abbr title=\"Department for Education\">DfE<\/abbr>\u00a0is funding the charity, Education Support to provide free, professional supervision to school and college leaders.
