It affects how we think, feel and act.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Good mental health means generally living life in a satisfying way. It includes:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<li>engaging in school or work<\/li>\n<li>connecting with friends, families and your communities<\/li>\n<li>managing stresses<\/li>\n<li>coping well with life&#8217;s ups and downs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s normal to feel sad, stressed, angry or anxious sometimes. But when these feelings last for longer than usual and start to affect your everyday life, it&#8217;s important to find out what\u2019s going on and what to do about it.<\/p>\n<h2>Why mental health is important<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adolescence and young adulthood can be an exciting time. You\u2019re figuring out who you are and what\u2019s important to you.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are also lots of changes happening in your:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<li>brain<\/li>\n<li>body<\/li>\n<li>emotions<\/li>\n<li>relationships.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These changes can make this a challenging time for your mental health. It\u2019s a time when mental health issues may emerge and extra support may be needed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Good mental health is important so you can enjoy life and deal with its challenges. Understanding your mental health and how to cope in helpful ways sets you up for a healthy future.<\/p>\n<h2>Self-harm<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Self-harm is when people deliberately hurt themselves. Young people often report that they self-harm to try and manage distressing emotions or when feeling overwhelmed by feelings, thoughts or memories.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For some young people, self-harm is a one-off event. For others, it can happen several times or become a repeated behaviour that can be hard to change.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a person is self-harming, it doesn\u2019t always mean they\u2019re thinking about suicide. But people who self-harm are at an increased risk of suicide.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The consequences of self-harming can be serious. There are many factors that can contribute to suicidal thoughts or feelings.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.headtohealth.gov.au\/crisis-links\">Help is available<\/a>\u00a0if you are experiencing mental health issues, self-harming or feeling suicidal.
